What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government-funded scheme that provides support and services to people with disabilities. The NDIS was introduced in 2013 to provide people with disabilities more control over their lives by giving them access to funding for disability-related services and supports.
The NDIS is designed to be individualised and person-centred, meaning that support and services are tailored to the unique needs of each individual. NDIS participants work with a support coordinator to develop a plan identifying their goals, needs and aspirations and the support and services required to achieve them.
The NDIS is funded by the Australian Government and is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). PACC is an NDIS registered provider in Adelaide, South Australia.
What types of support and services are funded by the NDIS?
The NDIS funds a wide range of essential services, including daily living assistance, specialised accommodation, therapy services, mobility equipment, home modifications, group activities, community participation programs, and employment support.
What sets the NDIS apart is its person-centred approach — support is tailored to the unique needs, goals, and aspirations of each participant. With the guidance of a support coordinator, individuals develop a personalised plan that outlines the services and supports needed to help them live more independently and reach their goals.
What's the difference between registered and unregistered NDIS providers?
The key difference between registered and unregistered providers lies in their relationship with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and their ability to deliver services under the NDIS.
Registered providers — like EspouseCare — have met the NDIA’s strict standards for quality, safety, qualifications, and insurance. This means NDIS participants can trust that registered providers have been thoroughly vetted and are committed to delivering reliable, high-quality services.
Unregistered providers, on the other hand, have not undergone the same compliance process and are not formally approved by the NDIA. While they may still offer services, they are not subject to the same oversight, which may affect the consistency and quality of the care they deliver.
NDIS participants can choose to work with either registered or unregistered providers based on their preferences and plan flexibility. However, working with a registered provider is generally recommended to ensure the highest level of service quality, safety, and peace of mind.
